Gas Tax Supports York Region Transit McGuinty Government Investments Strengthen Economy And Gets People Moving
Markham – Provincial support through the gas tax is getting more people out of their cars and onto public transit.

This year, the Regional Municipality of York will receive $14,067,319 in gas tax revenues. Last year, York Region received $13,486,480 in gas tax funding.

These funds have helped bring about the following improvements:
  • An additional 61,000 service hours for York Region Transit (YRT) and Viva Rapid Transit in 2008 and a further 24,600 service hours in 2009
  • YRT service to new subdivisions in Richmond Hill, Markham, Newmarket, Vaughan and Whitchurch-Stouffville
  • Viva extension to the Cornell Community in Markham

Provincial gas tax dollars are also contributing to the construction of a new maintenance and operations facility in Vaughan, and upon completion later this year will be able to accommodate up to 250 buses.

Ontario shares two cents per litre of gas tax revenues with municipalities for public transit. The government has provided municipalities with more than $1.3 billion in gas tax funding since 2004, including more than $321 million this year.

The McGuinty government’s investments in public transit have helped expand and improve transit services in York Region and across Ontario - increasing ridership by 102 million passenger trips since 2003. This took 85 million car trips off our roads.

“I am pleased by the Government of Ontario’s long-tem commitment of allocating gas tax dollars towards our growth-related transit and rapid transit needs across York Region,” said Bill Fisch, York Region Chairman and CEO. “By helping move people more efficiently, reducing traffic congestion and improving our air quality, we are ensuring that York Region is a desirable place to live, work and play.”
