MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT SETS MOST AGGRESSIVE WAIT TIME TARGETS IN CANADA Better Access to General Surgery in Central LHIN
Ontario is setting aggressive wait time targets for general surgeries in the Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) as part of an expansion of its successful Wait Time Strategy.
Wait times for general, orthopaedic and ophthalmic elective surgeries are now available by hospital at www.ontariowaittimes.com. The target for elective surgeries in all of these areas ranges from 12 to 26 weeks. Current wait times are below the provincial target in all three areas.
To boost efforts to further reduce wait times, the Central LHIN will receive $1,448,700 as part of Ontario’s $11.64 million for additional procedures at the following hospitals: $ 879,200 for Markham-Stouffville Hospital, and $141,000 for York Central Hospital.
“Our Wait Time Strategy is working,” said David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. “As we expand our strategy to cover general surgeries, wait times continue to decline in the five other key areas already measured. I am pleased with this success as more and more Ontarians get the care they need sooner.”
QUICK FACTS:
  • Wait time is defined as the time between when the surgeon and patient agree to proceed with surgery and when it is performed.
  • Ontario has invested $1.1B to deliver 1.69M procedures since the start of Ontario's Wait Time Strategy.
  • Ontario recently committed $7.2 million to lower wait times for infants and children by funding an additional 4,242 paediatric surgeries at 29 hospitals across Ontario.
